1:03 East Side of the Square

Public Deposited

100 Block North Franklin; Kirksville Photos by Drake, 1893: The Clifford Henry Album (MUSDP K1)

From newspaper accounts, one could get the impression that the east side of the square was not a good place to do business in the early 1890s. The stores seem to have changed quite frequently and all but one of the ground floor businesses in this shot either closed or changed hands during the first half of 1893. Working north along the block: Cross & Bro., Grocers, 106; Cole & Green, Furniture & Undertakers, 108 (owner/name change April 1893); J. E. Owen, Grocer, 110 (closed June 1893); L. A. Willard, Grocer, 112 (closed not long after Willard's death in Feb. 1893); J. F. Whitacre's New York Dry Goods in the Wilson Block, 116-118 (closed Apr 1893). Upstairs at 102 1/2, C. L. Lewis, Attorney at Law remained in the same place for years.
