You, your friends and your classmates made this years history as recorded in the following pages; absorb it with the pride of knowing that you were a part of the Bulldog spirit that link these pages into a sparkling reminiscence of by-gone days. Contents Administration, Faculty Students Organizations, Activities Athletics (Page 2) ADMINISTRATION (Page 3) No one studies harder, learns more, or awaits the bell any more than our teachers. No one worries more about our school or gives more time to its betterment than our administrators. From our simplest class problem to our most intimate secretes, they set the example for us and teach us how to cope with them. From the highest professor to the newest member of the staff - we learn from them and as true humans, they learn from the students. Here, then, are the ones that teach us the whats, whens, wheres, whys and hows of success, freedom and brotherhood. Alpha Kappa Lambda Alpha Kappa Lambda started the year off right with a picnic at Forest Lake. This was followed by several informal house parties and topped off by the Annual Alumni-Active Homecoming Banquet. The rush smoker and rush banquet brought 18 fine men in as pledges of A.K.L. The annual Pledge Dance carried the theme of the Devil's Dance. Big devils and little devils danced to the tune of strains from Hades. The A.K.L, skit for Trump Night, "What's That Make Me," was a howling success. The Community Service Project which A.K.L, sponsors, was carried on successfully. Ron Phillips wielded the gavel, with Chuck Seward Vice-President; Glen Easterday, Corresponding Secretary; Wayne Sterrett, Recording Secretary; Bob Eatock, Chaplain; George Vineyard, Historian; Chuck Woods, Treasurer, and Dr. Dean Rosebery as Sponsor. A.K.L.'s in high places this year were-- Glen Easterday and Ron Phillips in Blue Key; Glen Easterday in Who's Who and on the Student Council; Bill Barton as President of the Vets Club; and Charlie Ahn as President of International Club. Blue Key The highest men's honor fraternity is one of the popular service fraternities on the campus. Probably the biggest service the Blue Key members do is the publishing of the student directory each year. Other yearly projects of these Blue Key members are: showing the campus attractions to visitors on Parents Day, taking charge of the Homecoming Parade and ushering at baccalaureate and commencement exercises. Pledgeship is not just an everyday occurrence of an everyday guy. The organization is limited to twenty men with high scholastic averages, outstanding qualities in character, service and leadership. Index Staff The main aim of the Index staff this year is to win again the first place MCNA Plaque which they won last May for the best college paper in the state. As the Echo goes to press it is too early to know the outcome. Colored nameplates and headlines prevailed and two special football and basketball issues also took top honors on the campus. The Index also helped in the passing of the $75,000,000 Bond Proposition by printing pictures showing the need of repairs and new buildings on campus. A trip to the University of Missouri Journalism Workshop this fall gave many staff members a new slant on newswriting. Eloise Seaman kept the ads coming in all year while Pat Shelton Bristol and Edward S. Dodson kept the typewriter and linotype machines busy. Miss Agnes Slemons, adviser, and H. Green Simpson, typographer, were always on hand when the first runs came off the press. Jeannette Krueger, winter quarter editor interviews Dr. Ryle. Six of our students and the Student Director took a trip to the Glorieta Baptist Assembly in Glorieta, N. M. Religious Focus Week went over great with Mr. Denny and his five man crew. With S/Sgt. John H. Reese, Jr., directing, our choir sang the interpretation of the theme at the State BSU Convention in Kansas City. Everyone was really mixed up at our backwards party in March, but in May no one was too mixed-up for food at our Spring Banquet. FIRST ROW: Pat Anthony, Eloise Seamen, Sue Evans, Virgina Keethler, Janet Bigsby, Barbara Clark, Kay Moots. SECOND ROW: Judy Payne, Kirsten Larsen, Jim Kennedy, Mason Benn, Alice Tague, Dean Trainer, Jack Rice, Sherman Nave, Carol Barnes, Dewayne Wellborn, Mauritta Moore, Carolyn Shafer, Shirley Barnett. DSF started off the year with twenty-five members back. Six students attended the State Fall Retreat at the Lake of the Ozarks held in October. The past summer five DSF'ers attended the National DSF Convention at Lake Webster, Indiana, in late August. During the Christmas season the group went caroling at the three community homes for the aged. Also two ice skating parties where most of the students spent their time falling down and getting up, but it was fun, wasn't it? The group was host to the State Convention this year in March. Officers for the year were Jack Rice, President; Shirley Barnett, Vice-President; Kay Moots, Secretary; Marjorie and Russell Roberts, Sponsors. They started out the school year with a trip to Lake Poinsett, South Dakota; then came the Watermelon Feed; our first Homecoming Float; our first Trump Night skit; our own Wesley Directory; the trip to Spring Retreat, and our own newspaper, "Campus Capers." The regular Sunday night meetings were the most important and solved many of our campus problems. They were sometimes very entertaining too. We had twelve officers, who were headed by: Bennie Wilsey, president; Lorraine Jerome, Vice-President; Betty Ross, Scretary; and Carl Baldwin, Treasurer. The Wesley group will miss the Seniors next year, but we have quite a few Juniors, Sophomores, and Freshmen. So we should be real active next year, so see you, '56-'57. Westminister Fellowship Westminster Fellowship students enjoy a game of ping pong. This group takes an active part in the life of the Presbyterian Church. They participate in Noon Day Devotions and in the World Student Day of Prayer and many other religious activities. Gerdine Orwiller is president of the group. Newman Club The Newman Club is a newly organized club for Catholic students on this campus. It is part of a large organization all over the country. To assist in the social and spiritual lives of its membership is its function. Speakers were brought from different sections of Missouri to talk on problems with which many young adults are faced. At Christmas we gave a dance for the members and their friends. A retreat was held at Conception Abbey, and a trip to the University of Iowa's chapter were a few of the many projects of the club besides the banquet which ended the year's activities. The spiritual director is Fr. Richard Carney; President, Bob Bradley; Dale Favier, Vice-President; Joyce Hall, Recording Secretary; Judy Paradise, Corresponding Secretary; Peggy Brundage, Treasurer; and Mike Flynn, Committee Chairman. It all gave us an outstanding Student Council for '55-'56. Dances after athletic events, Homecoming activities, assisting with Parents' Day in the fall and the preparation of the 5th Annual Trump Night were all a part of the Student Council activities. Social Committee From the first piece of crepe paper at the Homecoming Dance, to tearing down the last piece of decoration at the Echo Dance, the busy hands of the Student Social Committee worked. The giant football for the entrance at the Homecoming Dance, the fireplace and the other decorations at the Christmas Dance, the Echo Dance decorations and the many letters to bands for all these dances were only part of this year's accomplishments by the Social Committee under Chairman Norma Wilson and the supervision of Dr. Pauline D. Knobbs. SEATED: Tom Churchwell, Dick Franklin, Al Holzmeier, Al Cooley, Dr. Pauline D. Knobbs, Norma Wilson, Stan Shkolnick, Charlene Brooks, Nancy Hedges, Marion Strohman. It was evident that many long hard hours had gone into the preparation of the skits when the judging for first, second and third came around. After all the judges' votes were tallied, Alpha Sigma Alpha received first place recognition with their skit titled "The Life of Ryley" wherein they showed the ordinary dull class room day, considerably exaggerated. Delta Sigma Epsilon took second prize with their version of "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs," slightly altered for underwater action, and called "Seaweed Green and the Seven Sponges." With the idea of travel being useless when we have representatives of most of the world here on the campus, gave the International Club third prize for their skit, "Who Needs the Navy." The Bulldogs got off to a roaring start of eight consecutive victories before their first defeat. They met defeat only twice in conference play. Showing exceptional accuracy, the Purple and White Cagers thrilled the crowds by breaking the 100 mark four times and ending their season with a 17-4 record. Their duties include assisting during Homecoming and ushering at athletic events. This organization has a K Club dance every spring, and participate at the football and basketball banquets every year. This group is sponsored by R. E. Valentine, and headed by Ken Barker, who is President, and who is not pictured. Track With over 25 men reporting, Coach Kenneth Gardner's track squad was delayed somewhat by the basketball tournament and the unfavorable weather in March. Women's Athletic Association W.A.A, started off the year by having a get-acquainted party for the freshmen. Next came the intramurals--team sports and individual and dual sports. One of our biggest events of the year was our Sports Day which was March 10. Many college volleyball teams participated in Kirk Auditorium that day. We traveled to Missouri University for their volleyball tournament, March 24. Last year we took second place. At the W.A.A. Banquet, the awards and trophies were presented and the installation of our new officers for next year took place. "Jump Ball" (Page 121) K. S. T. The problems of putting them together in order was the one Editor Dewayne Wellborn and Assistant Editor Phil Williams faced, while paying for it was faced by Business Manager J. C. Shelton and Assistant Business Manager Mason Benn. The cover design, end sheets, foreword and division pages were designed by Marion Stroman, Jack and Jerry Harp, senior art students. Serving as reporters and writers were Jim Hedges and Don Swayze and typing their material were typists Barbara Moles and Charmain Johnson. Photographer for this year was Kenneth Sykes of Sykes Studio, often times working night and day to meet deadlines. Special thanks goes to Dr. and Mrs. Allen and their office staff in the Personnel Division in checking names and activities of students; to the Dean's Office sending all those Echo packages; to the Business Office for the salary checks at the end of each month; to the Office of the President for suggestions on the faculty and administration sections; to the Echo Board for their cooperation with the staff to give you a good Echo, and to the entire staff of the American Yearbook Company of Hannibal, the printers of this year's Echo.
