ECHO 1940 (page i) Northeast Missouri Archives Copy 2 State University (page ii) Office of the Dean (page 1) The Echo 1940 Northeast Missouri State Teachers College Paul Greene Editor Arnold Prater BUS. MGR. (page 2) An Inviting Campus (page 4) Baldwin Hall (page 5) Joseph Baldwin (page 6) Science Hall (page 7) The Smokestack (page 8) Foreword A dedication of the 1940 Echo has to be made to that intangible something which exists on this campus as -- Spirit One feels it as he enters the buildings, he feels it as he walks across the campus, as he watches the athletic teams in action or listens to the singing of the old school song. This thing we call "School Spirit" was not born of itself; it has been planted into every brick, every plot of ground, and into every tree and rock on this campus by the pioneer educators who lived and died in the hope that this school might someday enter into an era of greatness. Today that very thing is happening; it is a new era for this college. The frontiers have been passed and the lives of those men are evidenced by the beginning of a new growth. This book is published that you, the students, may, years hence, look back and mark 1940 among the really great years of your life. Read this book and cherish it, for the passing of time will surely endear it to your hearts. This is only one of the numerous duties and functions the Board of Regents performs. Also, because of their efforts, the new industrial arts building is now a reality. Ideas and policies concerning the school are handled by these men who are to be commended for their part in building a bigger and better Northeast Missouri State Teachers College. Left to Right: J. The College has a form of student government that is becoming more widespread among American colleges and universities each year. The Council has charge of the money collected through activity fees, to be used for entertainment. Two all-school dances and two all-school shows each quarter sponsored by the Council for students . . . . tea dances introduced for first time, two were held .... year's entertainment climaxed when Little Jack Little played for an All-School dance . . . . also helped finance cooperative programs and concerts and Rotary lectures. Jacquelyn Winsler and Emil McNeely went to national student government meeting at Minneapolis .... found we had one of the strongest student councils in the United States. It truly is an integral part of the scheme of "the old Bulldog Spirit." This year the group sponsored the first Real Homecoming we have had in many a day. There were scores of old grads floating around that day to hear famous "Curly" McWilliams, the old Bulldog star, to watch the parade of over fifteen floats, all beautifully decorated, and to see the exciting football game and attend the banquet and dance. Blue Key plans to make this an annual affair. The group also ushers at various school functions, maintains a loan fund, and gives a dance once during the year. With thirteen letter men available and the rest of the squad composed of freshmen, Coach Mai Eiken, late of Minnesota University, produced a team that showed worlds of scrap and really developed during the season. The last few games served fair warning to their brother M. I. A. A. members not to disregard the Bulldogs next fall. On September 4 the Purple and White team invaded the lair of the Iowa State Teachers Panthers, only to go down in defeat 12-0. Then came a real thriller with Culver-Stockton. . . Frank Noble booted a third quarter field goal to give the Bulldogs a stirring 3-0 victory. Individual pictures (top to bottom, right to left): Ralph King, Halfback; Roy Phillips, Halfback; Bob Mills, Guard; Arnold Prater, Fullback; Clifford Bohmback, Halfback; Arthur Cowles, Halfback; Richard Hines, Tackle; Milo Yagel, Guard; Henry Fountain, Quarterback; Paul Ward, Center. The next week in a rough and tumble affair that had the spectators wild-eyed, Kirksville smashed Chillicothe Business College into submission 14-0. The big Purple team led Cape Girardeau 3-0 until the final minute when the Red Raiders smashed over the touchdown which gave them the game. The heat took its toll at Springfield and the Bears had a perfect Homecoming, defeating Kirksville 27-0. Warrensburg spoiled our homecoming by a 21-7 victory. (page 115) Football Then came the highlight of the season! Mighty Maryville almost toppled before the fighting Bulldogs -- a real thriller that ended 19-13 in favor of the Bearcats. Finally, on a muddy field, the Bulldogs fought a bitter battle at Rolla, losing 13-6. Not in picture: Brockman. In his second year as basketball mentor here, Coach Malcolm Eiken produced what local fans call the "fightin'est" Bulldog team in many a day. Long in the doldrums of conference competition, this year's aggregation proved a thorn in the side of every team they met. It just seemed as if Dame Fortune had a special peeve at the Bulldogs. They lost 10 games by three points, or less . . . and eight of them were lost by less than one goal. This season especially pleased the students and the townspeople because every game was clean and hard fought, almost every moment v/as a thriller -- baskets piled up, the band played and a general revival in basketball interest began. (page 117) BASKETBALL With such players as the high-scoring Shores, Shwarzer, and Bass and the battling Lane and Bohmback, the Bulldog team was constantly a thrill-provider. The boys were exceptionally "hot" when they drubbed Tarkio, National Intercollegiate Basketball champs, to the tune of 59-38. Who could ever forget the Maryville game when we led up until the last second, and the way we eked out over the mighty Iowa State Teachers. . . Yes sir, sports fans, we had a real team this year and if an election to find public opinion were held this student body would cast their all for the Bulldogs and their fine coach. In a triangular meet with Rolla and Warrensburg, wound up last. At the indoor meet of the M. I. A.
