(Page 1) Fries Germany Thursday March the 20 1919 My Dear mother I will ans [sic] your letter I Received a few days ago was glad to Hear you were all well I am well and feeling fine hope this finds all at home the same you said Roy Darnell got Home and was telling you how the y.m.c.a. was doing us over here well I cant dispute his word one bit for we buy our stuff from them. There is only a few things we dont hafto [sic] pay for & that is stationary [sic] to write Home on here is what they sell us cookies cigaretts [sic] tobaco [sic] chocolate and things like that we pay a big price for Its The Knights of Columbus are doing a big lot for us boys instead of the w.y.mc.a. They give us everything they have over here give us all the cigaretts [sic] we can carry and ask us (Page 2) [no text] (Page 3) 2 to take more I think more of the K of C in one minuet [sic] than I ever will of the y.m.c.a. They sure charge us for it all and we cant eat at the Red Cross at all if we have any kitchen with us Then we hafto [sic] buy it but we dont hafto [sic] pay much when we eat with them But 33 dollars a month dont go verry [sic] far when you send 10 dollars alotment [sic] home and 670 cents a month insurance out of it well mamma I know when we will start for home now some in June I think the first we are haveing [sic] a nice time Here in germany now you ask me if we get plenty to eat yes uncle Sam feeds us good when a man gets all He wants to eat at the table 3 times (Page 4) [no text] (Page 5) 3 a day he dont hafto [sic] go to the w.y.m.c.a. Do you think so, about the money I sent Home I sent it while I was at war miles I ask about it the other day he said He did not send it till after we came Here its all o.k. you need not worry I Have the stubs of the checks you ask me if we get all the sleep we want yes we can go to bed at 6 in the evening and sleep till 6 in the morning if we want to I will have my pichure [sic] made & send you soon I am learning to speak german pretty fast you wouldent [sic] believe I can hold a pretty good conversation with a german and I have only bin [sic] here too [sic] months Did you get the postals I sent you of this city its [sic] a beatiful [sic] place I got (Page 6) [no text] (Page 7) a letter from Helen yestarday [sic] ten pages oh yes I won the four hundred and forty yard boat race and I am getting ready to take my trip on the boat on the Rhine river to Caflenz germany a lot of the boys have already made the trip its a five hour ride they have the Band on the boat the boys say its [sic] a fine trip I will say byby [sic] with lots of love to mamma & papa write me a big newsy letter soon your loving son.
