(Page 7) DEDICATION To President Eugene Fair we respectfully dedicate this book. We feel that his life and work are stronger arguments than mere words to describe the incalculable amount of the better things he has instilled in both the college and its students through efforts and examples set by ten years of unparalleled service. THE ECHO STAFF (Page 8) [photo caption] Another year has gone its way Autumn's seared leaves have floated to earth, Winter's chill winds and mantle of snow Seem but gliding yesterdays. But they are gone as shadows from the new born dawn Now comes spring's triumphant smile The singing soaring lark in early morn' The soft green grass, the tender flowers. Bidding us all salute the "gates of heaven" They too, will pass in summer's blazing heat. Quintessence of each are echoes, memories. Replete in this our yearly book. They hold for us a measured charm. Clear call for noble actions in the coming years. -Eugene Fair. (Page 9) WE SHALL LOOK BACK IN LATER YEARS AT INCIDENTS, NOW HELD NOT DEAR. BUT LATER, AFTER ALL IS DONE, RECALL IT'S HERE THAT LIFE BEGUN. -Wm. Crutchfield, Jr. (Page 10) The ECHO of EDUCATION (Page 11) FOREWORD THROUGH the splendid co-operation of the students and faculty members this book has a higher representation of K.S.T.C. personalities than any previous Echo. A unique feature of the 1935 Echo is, every time an individual appears in the various classes and organizations he has a different pose of himself. No one pose of the same person appears more than once throughout the book. We have endeavored to illustrate our school as we would like you to remember it and everybody to know it, tying together the things of the past to that which is to come. (Page 12) CONTENTS Administration Classes Athletics Organizations Campus Echoes (Page 13) JOSEPH BALDWIN, founder of the American "four-year" teachers college; scholar and skillful classroom teacher. He was first among Americans to say: "The professional teacher, from kindergarten to high school inclusive, should have scholarship equaling the best that colleges can furnish;" and that "Such scholarship should be interwoven with professional studies and some directed student teaching." (Page 14) JOHN R. KIRK, student, scholar; administrator, classroom tactician, builder of sanitary rural schools. He says: "Teaching is the highest function in all education," that "Good teaching secures evidence of some productive activity by every student in every class every day;" and that, "Lecturing and quizzing do not and can not do this." A seven-game schedule was arranged but due to continual rains only one match with the Osteopaths was played, along with the annual M.I.A.A. Conference State Meet. In the M.I.A.A. Conference Meet Captain Troester lost to Sharp of Springfield in the second round. Sharp later won the State Singles Championship of the Conference. Kirksville's second entry, Guthrie, was eliminated by Manley the Cape Girardeau entrant, who turned out to be the runner-up in the final singles play-off. Captain Troester and Crutchfield, teamed together in doubles, lost a hard fought match to the Maryville doubles team, who won second honors in the Conference Meet. Members of the varsity team were: Captain Carl Troester, Jr., Kirksville; William Crutchfield, St. Charles; and David Guthrie, Chillicothe. Golf This is the first year that the Teachers College had a golf team. The team was very successful. Through the courtesy of the Kirksville Country Club, the team was allowed to practice and hold their meets on the Club's golf course. MEMBERS OF THE GOLF TEAM Robert Mulford, Kirksville, Mo. Arlington Vieth, St. Louis, Mo. Harley Hunsaker, Kirksville, Mo. Hugh Edward Wynn, Unionville, Mo. Ralph Valentine, Coach RESULTS The team won from the K.C.O.S. team. Won one match from Missouri U. and lost one. Lost to Springfield Teachers College. Placed second in the M.I.A.A. Conference Meet, held at Kirksville. Any student enrolled in the college may try out for the choir. During the course of the year the choir gives concerts in the towns of northeast Missouri, and occasionally makes more extensive trips. During the past two or three years the choir has accepted invitations to sing at the Missouri State Teachers Association, Kansas City; Missouri State Music Teachers Association, Columbia, Mo.; Washington University, St. Louis; National Music Teachers Association, Lincoln, Nebraska. (Page 131) The Kirksville Symphony Orchestra THE Kirksville Symphony Orchestra, which is sponsored by the College, is recruited from the best players in the Kirksville College of Osteopathy and Surgery, the Kirksville High School, the Teachers College and the community at large. Starting with a small group of music lovers that met weekly for the purpose of studying the masterpieces of orchestral music it has rapidly grown to its present membership of fifty. While its primary purpose is still to afford to its members the opportunity to become familiar with orchestral literature and to acquire experience in symphonic playing, the orchestra gives annual public concerts and cooperates with the vocal forces of the school and community in productions of the standard operas and oratorios. (Page 132) Eucharis EUCHARIS was organised in January, 1935, by girls having won the highest or blazer award given by the Women's Athletic Association, and evidencing a continued interest in this field. Its purposes are to provide opportunity for advanced leadership in the dance and sports, to present latest materials of interest to those members who entertain a special desire for knowledge in these fields, and to offer opportunities for training of the members who shall endeavor to promote higher ideals and a high professional spirit in physical education activities.
