(Page 1) ON ACTIVE SERVICE WITH THE AMERICAN EXPEDITIONARY FORCE AMERICAN Y.M.C.A. A.P.O. 793 France Dec. 21 1918 Dear Mother: I received your letter of Nov. 29th this morning. Also one from Glenn dated Nov. 28. That's the first I have heard from him since the 11th. Somehow I felt he was O.K. but was beginning to get a little [illegible text]. Both of us sure were lucky. I hardly dreamed both of us would come thru [sic] without a scratch. We have been having some rather cool weather the past week. We haven't had any snow yet however, I am feeling fine and all that has bothered me is a bad tooth. However it is coming along nicely now thanks to Uncle's dentists. well this Div. was put in the Army of Occupation (Page 2) sometime ago, but now I hear we are out of it again. Anyhow we didn't move to Luxemborg [sic], and I hear that the Battalion that did is coming back. If so we may return early in the spring for Border Thirty. If Villa gets started again, of course the 34th will have to go to the Border. I'd just as soon go to Germany tho [sic]. Well [illegible text] I've got another school detail so I'll be away xmas. My name has been submitted to attend a 2nd boys [sic] infantry school. It starts the 23rd and lasts 6 weeks so if I go, I will have something to occupy my mind a few days. Glenn was figuring on looking me up before long but this school business will [illegible text] the detail again. Anyhow I doubt if he could get a pass to come over here anyhow. Some would like to see him, but guess I wont [sic] get to until we meet in KV. again. The flue [sic] over is keeping things cloud down. I don't see how the schools ever will get caught up this year. I wrote to Uncle Jimmy sometime ago as I knew he would be anxious to know if we were still kicking. I got a letter from the B.U.F. this morning. I don't know how he got my address but anyhow it is a good system of advertising. Whenever Uncle Frank's hear from Bob, let me know as I am anxious to know how he came out. I suppose Sam didn't get across. Walter Beard's company was just getting ready to leave when the thing ended. (Page 3) Bet he would have liked to make the trip. Even I was the only one out of my class who got to see the Front unless it was Roy Lilly. He was over here someplace but I haven't heard from him for a long time. well if Pa wants to work he is lucky in having an easy job inside for the winter. By next winter he'll probably have a larger family, by one at least. There is nothing more to write so will close for this time Hope everyone is feeling fine and enjoying life. with love to all, Your son, Dick Sgt. James R. Johnson, Co. I, 34th Inf. Ameican E.F.
