(Page 1) NATIONAL WAR WORK COUNCIL ARMY AND NAVY YOUNG MEN'S CHRISTIAN ASSOCIATIONS "WITH THE COLORS" Camp Funston 1/9/1918 Mr. J. W. Heyd Kirksville, Mo. Dear Mr. Heyd, I received your card and was very glad to be remembered by you. How are you and the rest of the family? How is school? I very often think of you and the old K.S.N.S. It has a very warm place in my heart. When I meet a Kirksville boy it seems like someone from home. There are several K.S.N.S. boys here as you may know. Camp life is about as good as it could be under the circmstances of course it is not like home but Uncle Sam takes pretty good care of his boys. (Page 2) [no text] (Page 3) NATIONAL WAR WORK COUNCIL ARMY AND NAVY YOUNG MEN'S CHRISTIAN ASSOCIATIONS "WITH THE COLORS" 1917 I have been home twice since I came out here. Once on a two day's pass and the other time to gather corn. The last time I was away from camp two weeks. It sure is time to get away once in awhile. I was well remembered Christmas by my friends. I told the boys in one way it paid to be a soldier at Christmas anyway. I think your plan of remembering all the old students in service is a fine one. I received four letter [sic] from different students also a card from, Pres. Kirk, yourself, and Mr. Bray. The other K.S.N.S. boys here were all remembered too (Page 4) [no text] (Page 5) NATIONAL WAR WORK COUNCIL ARMY AND NAVY YOUNG MEN'S CHRISTIAN ASSOCIATIONS "WITH THE COLORS" 1917 I have seen an account of your service play (should I say our) in several different papers, I think there are two boys here whose name was not in the index the last time the names of the boys in service was given, Bradshaw from Unionville and Botts from Scotland County. Both Botts boys are here. Sgt. J. C. Harlow, a student of 1909 and 10 is also out here. The index has not been coming to me very regularly I guess it is owing to the congested conditions of the mail. I am in the 356th regiment band. The position of a bandsmen is a very good one as you are not required (Page 6) [no text] (Page 7) NATIONAL WAR WORK COUNCIL ARMY AND NAVY YOUNG MEN'S CHRISTIAN ASSOCIATIONS "WITH THE COLORS" 1917 to do as much outside work as the soldier and you learn something that will help you after you get thru [sic] with this job. We do not know when we will leave this camp but guess we will be here sometime yet. Will close. Give my regards to Mrs. Heyd and and [sic] the children. Your friend Mus. John A. Childers 1 bdgs.
