(Page 1) ON ACTIVE SERVICE with the AMERICAN EXPEDITIONARY FORCE AMERICAN Y.M.C.A. Aug. 9, 1918 Dear Brother and all. I will take the pleasure to write you's [sic] a few lines to let you know I am well and enjoying myself all ok. and I hope this finds you's [sic] enjoying the same good blessing. Well my camp is in an old French village all of the buildings in it are made of rock and they are very old some of the buildings I suppose were built before Napoleon's day. there is also an old stone church there is a village about every one or two miles apart in this country and in each village is a large church there is wheat fields on the surrounding country and it looks a little like the country back home. Our Regiment has a good band and they give us a nice concert every (Page 2) evening there is a bunch of French soldiers in our neighboring village it is about one mile from this one, and there is a bunch of them that come up to our camp and enjoy our music and sing songs play and try to learn to talk our language. We try to speak theirs [sic] we sure have some fun. Well it will soon be supper time and time for standing retreat that is our bugle plays to our [illegible text] and we present our rifles and have a little ceremony every evening as our flag is lowered from the flag pole.
