(Page 1) Sat. Nov 23, 1918. Mrs. Nancy Gates Dear Folks at Home This is letter writing day for all of the U.S. Soldiers so I will write you all the news I can. I am fine, how are you? Well I went through the Argonne. Drive with the 139 Co. K. Well I will say I have had some experience. I had been on four fronts and one verry [sic] bluddy [sic] front and that was the argonne [sic]. I was on the Alsac Loraine in July and part of aug and the [illegible text] front in Sept and the Argonne front Oct 20. and the (Page 2) 2 Verdun Front Nov. and we had started to or was on our way to the St. Mahil Front when we were drawn from all fronts. Well father mother and all I have witnessed some verry [sic] heart rendering sights, but hope some day to land in the good old U.S.A. We always kept the Huns on the Run as true American soldiers we obeyed orders we was bound to win this war. alltho[sic] we have lost manny [sic] comrads [sic]. We are sorry to say we cant (Page 3) 3 bring them home with us, but they have fallen for a wonderful cause and they were true American soldiers. Just think of the world has been made free Just this peace. We have marched 100 miles in this sunny France that we might make the world safe, manny [sic] days. We have went hungry and nights we have spent on post for our dear American people, but we American soldiers don't mind anything as I am sure our (Page 4) (Page 5) 4 Dear father mothers and sweethearts will be waiting for us when we return to good old U.S.A. Tell brother when I get back I can ware [sic] any of his clothes. Well we were in the drive for six days and nothing to eat but 1 can of corn Willie had 10 hard tacks. We drove them over 22K in French. 5/8 of a mile 1.K. but those dutch were just like Jack Rabbets [sic] after they got out of their nests we alas got lots of prisoners and machine gun nests (Page 6) (Page 7) 5 but we can say we are luckey[sic] with being here to day [sic] as it sure seemed impossable [sic] for us to escape uninjured Well this is about all I can think of to day [sic] so I will close.
