(Page 1) Somewhere in Germany Aug 4-18 Prof. J.R. Howey Dear Old Prof.: well here is that long promised letter, it will not be long as they will not let us write much, Earl and I often talk of things that happened when we were kids, but what sticks out most prominently in my mind I think is, when I was playing the B flat Bass and Frank Evans was playing the Valve Trombone we were taking lessons together at my house I would go Ump. and Frank would go ta ta and there we were Ump ta ta Ump ta ta I sure wish we could have some of those old times back again, I can't forget either the time we played the Elmer Reunion. It rained on us, we started for the church to sleep all night at the top of the hill Earl slipped and sat down in the clay, and he had his new uniform on too, We are hearing different kind [sic] of music over here now, the shrapnel hits the high C. The trench mortors [sic] and grenades play the Bass while the 75s hit the medium until they explode, we sure are having the time of our young lives over here, it is cold here and shivering now, well Prof. I will quit for this time, but will write again soon give my regards to all the folks.
