Camp. 15 [text illegible] Near Goldsboro March the 29 1865 My Dear friend it is with pleasure I take the present oppertunity [sic] to write you a fiew [sic] lines to let you know that I am well at this time I wrote you a letter at davenport [sic] and have got no answer yet I have a joly [sic] time on the S. C. and N. C. campaign one lived on the rich produce of the Confedracy [sic] witch [sic] is ham and eggs sweet potatoes and butter flour an[sic] meal chicken turkey geese and [text illegible] fresh pork fresh beef evry [sic] thing we could forrage [sic]. The most fault I found was making the swamps had to made the salt Catcher Swamp it was about crotch deep and was one mile and 1/4 furth [sic] wide it was on the 3rd of Feb. and you bet it was cold (Page 2) I suppose you have got the full detail of it by this time I got to try my ould [sic] musket a fiew [sic] times once we charged the ponies and made them run like the devil it was fun to see them run through the brush I think that ould [sic] Dutch woman told me some things that was true when she told my fortune at Kirksville. Lleffler I believe was the name. I had a nice ride on the Ocean it made lots heave [text illegible] but I did not get sea sick we was [sic] out of sight of land most times hours we went abord [sic] the boat at Thunderbald G. A. and got off at Rufort, S. C. Thare [sic] we feasted on oysters and [text illegible]. Well John I got two letters from my girl yesterday and she was well that was [text illegible] news for me I got 8 letters in the same day I guess my friend have not (Page 3) all forgot me yet. Well my time is half out all but 5 days that is 300 hundre [sic] dollers [sic] I have mad [sic] in 6 months, and had the pleasure of serving my country I have never missed one days duty since I left home I have the best health I ever had in my life. Well John I will be home next fall and then I will come down and see you and we will have a good time and then if you will go home with me I will wrrent [sic] you that you can enjoy your self thare [sic] for thare [sic] is [sic] lots of girls thare [sic] and they like to dance. My girl dont dance but that dont make any differance [sic] with me I like the fun as well as ever, tell me wher[sic] Clark is and if he is at home tell him to write to me also tell Jim to write (Page 4) Give my best respects to all of the [text illegible] friends pleas[sic] write soon Direct to James P.
