THE ECHO'S 90TH ANNIVERSARY EDITION

1867

1957

The Northeast Missouri State Teachers College at Kirksville, is celebrating its 
90th year of existence. Founded in 1867, it is one of the oldest state teachers 
colleges west of the Mississippi River. The school was establishd by Joseph Baldwin 
for the primary purpose of educating teachers for the public schools of this state, 
and still remains dedicated to that purpose. The college has grown from a single 
frame building with an enrollment of 140 students to its present position of an 
honored Missouri institution with 15 buildings and over 1700 students. The "ECHO"
is proud to recognize the service of this college on its 90th anniversary.

FOREWORD

A college annual is a victor's accolade and a jester's cap. 
It is a history, a novel, a dictionary, and a photograph album.
For its purpose--the capturing of the sight, the smell, 
the taste of college--for its value--the preservation of 
memories, friendships, experiences in learning--the annual
seals fast with a lid of glass the box containing a school year.

With this definition before us, we, the editor and staff 
members of the "ECHO", present the year nineteen hundred 
fifty-six and fifty-seven, reflected in the camera eye, 
recorded by a pencil, and bound by everlasting memories.

State Commissioner of Education

HUBERT WHEELER Regent Ex-Officio

Hubert Wheeler, State Commissioner of Education, who carries
out the duties of the State Board of Education, is supervisor
of all of Missouri's public schools. To keep in close contact
with the policies and management of the college, he meets
with the Board of Regents of our college, he meets with the
Board of Regents of our college as an ex-officio member.

Among the duties of Mr. Wheeler are the execution of the
general functions of the State Board of Education, the
improving of all phases of instruction concerned with
public education, health, and general welfare of learners on
various levels, and the assisting in effectively organizing,
managing, and financing the education program of the state.

BOARD OF REGENTS

The highest administrative and governing body of the Missouri
State Teachers College is the Board of Regents, composed of 
seven members.

Members of this year's board of Regents were: W.A. Cable, 
Hannibal, president; P.M. Marr, Milan, vice-president; 
Edward E. Swain, Kirksville, secretary; Herbert I. Sears, 
La Plata; W.A. Bagley, Shelbina; and Newton Waples, Kahoka. 
Hubert Wheeler, State Commissioner of Education, is a member

Assistant to the Office of President

The Assistant to the President, Robert L. McKinney, has 
the main function of representing the President, both on 
and off the campus.

This office maintains the Alumni Bureau, develops a sound 
public relations program, and prepares many of the official
publications for the college.

Office of the Registrar

The business of the Office of the Registrar is to preserve 
the integrity of the credit of the Teachers College and to 
keep the academic books of the school.

It is the duty of this office to admit students, to keep a 
complete record of the credits of all students, and to 
prepare a list of those applicants who meet all of the 
requirements for graduation.

Dean of Instruction

Dr. P. O. Selby Dean of Instruction

Dr. P. O. Selby as dean of instruction has the primary 
duty of conducting the educational program of the teachers
college. The Dean has full charge of all arrangements for 
the Baccalaureate and Commencement services. In addition he 
supervises a program of registration for the students, 
prepares the general bulletin of the college, the schedule of
classes, and arranges the weekly assembly programs. 

In all his activities he works closely with the office of 
the President and the office of Registrar. Among his duties 
are formulating and activating a program of supervision of 
instruction, acting as chairman of the Division of 
Instructional Service, the faculty Council, the granduate 
council, and the Curriculum Comittee

The Division of Extension Service

Head of the Division of Extension Service

The division of extension service deals with those activities 
which extend the services of teh college to all communities
served by the teachers college.

This division is divided into several bureaus. Among these bureaus 
are the placement bureau, which assists students and alumni in 
securing positions for which they are qualified ; and the Bureau 
of Correspondence and Extension Teaching which aids those who are 
unable to attend the college in residence.

The bureau of high school education activities, which directs 
the high school academic contests held on the campus each 
year, and the Bureau of Audi-Visual Education and program 
service, which has charge of a rental library films.

The Division of Business Service is responsible for the 
financial operation of the college, including the dormitories.

Through this division, all instiutional purchases and 
disbursements are made. The Stenographic Office, offering a
stenographer and duplicating service for the faculty, is 
maintained as a subsidiary of this division. The telephon 
exchange is also a subsidiary of this division.

The Division of Personnel Service

Head of the Division of Personnel Service

Under the direction of Dr. C. H. Allen, the division of 
personnel service deals wtih personal problems of the student
body. Through this division assistance with health, economic, 
social, educational, and vocational problems is given.

The Office of the Dean of Women is a part of the Division 
of Personnel Service. She is responsible for setting up a 
social calendar of activities on campus.

The Dean of Women, Dr. Pauline Knobbs, is also in charge 
of student in social or personal problems.

The social sororities on the campus work with this office 
through the Pan-Hellenic Council, of which Dr. Knobbs is 
sponsor.

The Office of Admissions

The Admissions Office, under the supervision of Charles Elam,
Director of Admissions, was created to assist prospective 
students before they arrive on the campus to enroll in the 
college.

Both by mail and personal contacts, questions about many 
subjects are answered through this office.

Other duties of this office include the operation of the news 
bureau for the college, and doing the photography for the 
school, which is used for illustrating official publications 
of this school and for a matter of record.

Now established as an instructional division, the library 
staff, as members of this division, offers course work in 
library sciene for school librarians

The pickler memorial library, named for a former 
faculty member, has over 125,000 books, including public 
documents, pamphlets, periodicals, and bound newspapers. 
The library also houses several special colelctions, 
including the Glenn Frank Memorial Library, The Laughlin 
contribution of research, a Missouriana collection, and a
collection of children's literature. Other campus collections 
of interest are the John R. Kirk Library and the Violette 
Museum's collection of antiques and souvenirs. Both of these 
collections are houses in the John R. Kirk Memorial.

The library staff, available for assitance with the resources 
of the library, provides reference services for the students 
and faculty.

The Division of Maintenance Service

Head of the Division of Maintenance Service

The Division of Maintenance Service has the job of keeping 
the buildings and ground of the Teachers College in good 
condition. Painting, repairing and cleaning the buildings, 
planting flowers and shrubs, shoveling snow, and keeping the 
lawns in good shape, have made the campus one of the most 
beautiful in the nation.

Engineers, custodians, firemen, carpenters, painters, 
electricians, night watchmen, and gardners are employed under 
the direction of the Head of the Division, Howard G. Morris.

Settling disagreements in and between fraternities and setting the 
dates for rush and pledge parties are just a few of the functions of the
Interfraternity Council.

Another on the program of the council is the Interfraternity Council 
Banquet. At this banquet. the President's Scholarship Trophy is awarded
to the fraternity with the highest honor point ratio.

The council is composed of the Presidents, Vice-Presidents and sponsors 
of the three Social Fraternities on the campus.

Panhellenic Council, composed of three representatives from each 
sorority, is sponsored by Dean of Women, Dr. Pauline Knobbs. All 
sorority activities are governed by this body.

Helping with Greek Week, sponsoring the Parent's Day Tea, and providing
cloak-room service at the dances are some of its activities.

The council sponsors a foreign student each year. The money for this 
project was made through the sale of student theater tickets.

The council also sponsors a banquet each spring where it awards to the 
sorority with the highest scholastic average a scholarship cup.

Blue Key, the highest men's honor fraternity, is one of the popular 
service fraternities on campus. Some of the activities in which Blue Key
is active are showing the campus attractions to visitors on Parents Day 
and Senior Day, taking charge of the Homecoming parade, ushering at 
baccalaureate and commencement exercises, and the biggest service of 
all, the publishing of the student directory each year.

The organization is limited to twenty men with high scholastic averages,
outstanding qualities in character, service and leadership.

CARDINAL KEY

The Eugene Fair Chapter of Cardinal Key, Sister organization to Blue 
Key, is a national honorary service organization for college women. 
Members are nominated by the chapter and selected by a faculty committee.
They are chosen for the qualities of leadership, scholarship, character,
and participation in school activities. They must also have 60 hours of 
college credit to be eligible for membership.

Selling Homecoming buttons, doing welfare work, ushering at college and 
civic functions, conducting tours on Senior Day are some of their 
activities. This year they offered a scholarship and sponsorship to a 
Hungarian girl.

Membership in Cardinal Key is held to twenty-five members.

Farmville, Virginia. Tri Sigma Members aim to contribute to campus

The Tri Sigmas had a very successful rush season, pledging 31 girls. 
The themes of their two rush parties were "Dior Brunch," and "Harvey's

Activities of the Student Council, governing organization of the 
student body, are planned for the benefit and enjoyment of the student 
body. The busy, smooth-running Council this year has brought much 
pleasure to the students. Political rallies, campaign badges, mud 
slinging, and ballots preceded last year's election which gave us such 
efficient and hard working council members this year.

Highlighting the activities of the year was the annual Echo Spring 
Formal Dance, featuring the music of Les Elgart and his orchestra. This 
dance was planned and executed by this year's Student Council.

The Phi Sig Rush Smoker and Apache Dance

PHI SIGMA EPSILON

Phi Sigma Epsilon is a national Social Fraternity for Men. This chapter 
was organized locally as Sigma Delta Tau in 1923, and was organized 
nationally in 1926 as one of the first three chapters in Phi Sigma 
Epsilon.

This year the Phi Sigs entered a float in the Homecoming parade, and 
had a good year as far as pledging goes.

This organization is sponsored by Duane Cole, and headed by Bob

President's box for the Homecoming game, co-managing the cloak room at 
school functions, helping with registration on Senior Day and at 
college conventions, running a concession stand at the Christmas Dance,

Helping in the local scout movement, acting as guides on Parent's Day

Pi Omega Pi is the national honorary undergraduate fraternity in 
Business Education. Alpha Chapter was founded on this campus by Dr. 
Paul O. Selby in 1923 Since that time, 98 chapters with almost 18,000 
members have been organized in colleges and universities in the United 
States. Alpha chapter has initiated 652 Business Majors.

This year's dramatists produced two major plays and several one-act 
plays. Members of the College Players formed the cast for George Bernard
Shaw's "You Never Can Tell." Cole Porter's "Kiss Me Kate," a joint 
undertaking of the College Players and the Music Department, was 
presented as the spring musical drama.

Three one-act plays; "The Dark Lady of the Sonnets," "Sicilian Limes," 
and "A Sunny Morning" were directed by student members and presented on 
February 6 in the Little Theater

The organization sponsored a special program on January 23 which 
featured Dr. Betsy Worrell.

PI KAPPA DELTA

"Resolved: That the United States should discontinue direct economic 
aid to foreign countries", was the question facing this year's 
debaters, directed by Sherod Collins.

Bob Shearer, Glen Easterday, Don Noble, Bob Cook, Werner Strick, 
Jim Miller, Ann Flinchpaugh, and Diantha Truitt made up the teams that 
took part in tourneys at Bradley University; in the Midwest Speech 
Tournament here; at Liberty Union College; at Kansas State Teachers 
College at Pittsburg; at the University of Nebraska, at the State 
Tournament; and at the National Tournament in Brookings, South Dakota.

The Senior Men's team. Bob Shearer and Glen Easterday, who won top 
ratings at State Tournament, 1956, had experience with another question
early in the season. They debated the negative of: "Resolved, that the 
North Atlantic Treaty Organization has outlived its usefulness," in a 
non-decision battle with Alex Grant and Roy Dickson from Oxford 
University, Oxford, England.

The International Club is an organization of all the foreign students 
representing their respective countries who are attending college here

The Colhecon Club, the college Home Economics Club, is both a social 
and a professional organization. It is affiliated with both the 
Missouri Home Economics Association and the American Home Economics 
Association.

The Christmas meeting which has for the past 16 years been held at the 
home of Dr. Llora MaGee, was held this year at the new Home Management 
House at 202 East Patterson. Other major activities of the year 
included a tea for the high school students, International students as 
guests, and the state convention March 22, at Columbia, Missouri.

The Historical Society, which is the oldest learned society on the 
campus, includes majors and minors in any of the Social Sciences, as 
well as other interested persons in these fields. The Society has

The Art Club has been very active this year. Working together as a club

the members of the group, and the sponsoring of Christmas cards for

FUTURE TEACHERS OF AMERICA

The organization of the Future Teachers of America Chapter on this 
campus was perfected in the fall of 1956. This organization is 
affiliated with the National Education Association, and the Missouri 
State Teachers Association. Its purpose is to encourage professional 
growth among the college students who are preparing to teach. The 
chapter has a membership of approximately 100 students, of which
slightly more than half are women. Membership is open to any college 
student preparing to teach, and having a scholarship honor point ratio 
of 1.0. The organization has been strongly supported by the Phi Delta 
Kappa Omicron Chapter on this campus.

Dr. Eli F. Mittler, Head of the Division of Extension Service is the 
Sponsor of the chapter.

The Pre-Osteopathic Club is composed mainly of students planning to 
enter the study of osteopathic medicine. K.S.T.C. is consistently one 
of the top schools in the nation in the production of Pre-Osteopathic 
students. The club is in close contact with the colleges of osteopathy 
and a very good guidance program is assured under the direction of the 
sponsor, Dr. John Black. Programs for the year included noted 
lecturers, medical films, and visitations to the Kirksville College of 
Osteopathy and Surgery and to Still-Hildreth sanatorium at Macon.

The Wesley Foundation gets bigger and busier every year. Among 
Wesley's activities this school year was their annual watermelon feed, 
Christmas party and senior breakfast.

Wesley participated in the Homecoming Parade with a float, put on a 
Trump Night skit, sponsored two teams in the Intramurals, attended the 
religious group's skating party, went to State Retreat and various 
other activities.

The group was kept on its toes by Lorraine Jerome, President; Don 
Baskett, Vice-President; Betty Ross, Secretary; Carl Baldwin, 
Treasurer; and twelve other officers.

The Sunday night Meetings formed the nucleus of this group, mixing 
seriousness with fun and solving many of the students' problems.

Fun, inspiration, fellowship, work and leadership are only a few of the 
things which B.S.U, offers K.S.T.C. students. The school year started 
with a Western Roundup party and ended with Spring Retreat in the 
Ozarks. Other highlights of the year were a hayride, State Convention 
in Springfield, Mo., a winning Homecoming float, an election night 
party, and a spring formal banquet.

A big event of the 56-57 year was the purchase of property joining the 
campus for a Baptist Student Center. The B. S.U. Council headed by Tom 
Kent, President, met weekly to keep the organization running smoothly.
