Founded in 1867, it is one of the oldest state teachers colleges west of the Mississippi River. The school was establishd by Joseph Baldwin for the primary purpose of educating teachers for the public schools of this state, and still remains dedicated to that purpose. The college has grown from a single frame building with an enrollment of 140 students to its present position of an honored Missouri institution with 15 buildings and over 1700 students. The "ECHO" is proud to recognize the service of this college on its 90th anniversary. For its purpose--the capturing of the sight, the smell, the taste of college--for its value--the preservation of memories, friendships, experiences in learning--the annual seals fast with a lid of glass the box containing a school year. With this definition before us, we, the editor and staff members of the "ECHO", present the year nineteen hundred fifty-six and fifty-seven, reflected in the camera eye, recorded by a pencil, and bound by everlasting memories.
