(Page 1) Sedalia Pettis Co. Mo Sept the 13th 1862 Dear Brother I take the present opportunity to let you know that I am well at present and hope that these few lines will find you enjoying the same blessing. I received your letter last evening and was glad to here [sic] from you. I have just come in off a scout which left here on the 9 [text illegible] of this month. We started from here in the (Page 2) night about 11 o’clock and rode till two when it commenced raining and the march was not over. The order was given to march on double quick and away we went splashing through the mud every fellow finding his own way. But that was not the worst, for the rain still continued and the mud still got deeper and harder the rain came and we look more like wild men than regular soldiers (Page 3) but we still kept on until the break of day was seen coming in the east. The rain begun to slacken and finally stopped. When it was fairly daylight we came to a little town which I have forgot but we did not stop there and still went until we came to Warrensburg where a halt was ordered. The [text illegible] Militia was there and the order was given to unsaddle and feed which (Page 4) we done and the next thing was to get something to eat but some lade [sic] down without any but it was a poor lay for our blankets was wet. We slept until 11 [text illegible] o clock when we was [sic] ordered to march again. When we rode until [text illegible] when we stopped to get our suppers and then went on. Two men stopped behind on business and the secesh took them prisoner. One of them was let loose on taking the oath. The other was held. I would tell you more but I have not got room. Your Brother Clark Zeigler
