The Grand Army of the Republic (G.A.R.) was created by Dr. B.F. Stephenson of Springfield, Illinois, for Union veterans of the Civil War. Missouri's first post was organized in Kirksville October 1, 1866, but disbanded a few years later after internal strife. It was reorganized in 1882 and was designated Post Number 22.
