Newly-weds Benjamin Franklin & Aleatha Amanda (Learned) Lamkin moved to Kirksville in December 1871 and opened Lamkin Drygoods. They were in business for over 30 years on the south side of the Square. Before coming to Kirksville, Ben had spent about 12 years in the retail & wholesale mercantile business in the gold fields of California, Oregon & Washington.
